Lukashenko Joked about the Clergy: if They do not Have Children They are Not Humans

Aleksandr Lukashenko joked about the Orthodox and Catholic clergy during his address to Belarusian people and the parliament (the video in the end of the article).

During his speech that was shown live on Belarusian television Channel 1 the President of the Republic of Belarus recollected his talks with the church hierarchs on the subject of many Christian denominations encouraging the citizens to have big families. According to A. Lukashenko, while answering the direct question whether they have children or not many unnamed “their holiness” and “their graces” gave a negative reply. “Then why are you teaching us to do that?” – Aleksandr Lukashenko publicly expressed his surprise. According to his “humorous” estimate, if a person does not have any children he/she is not a human being. At the same time the head of the state had doubted the hierarchs’ honesty as a matter of joke, expressing the confidence that must have children somewhere. “I am even sure about it”, – concluded the President with a laughter causing laughter in the Oval hall as well.

Besides, the Russian Orthodox Church prescribes all church ranks starting with bishops to take the monastic vows and to become celibate. There is a difference between the so-called white clergy (who can have a family) and black one (who cannot). Such decision is a sign of a specila devotion of clergy.

As a basis of such tradtition the words of Apostle Peter are given: “The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord… But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin–this man also does the right thing” (1 Cor. 7:32,37) .

The Protestant priest do not give such vows. Most of Belarusian Evangelical priests have big families. Besides, all Christian denomination call creating big families on the basis of the Bible which says that children is a God’s blessing. “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him” (Psalms 127:3).

There is notion among the population that the higher clergy revokes the right to have children and a family to look after the all believers. Such archpriests’ devotion causes great respect among the common parishioners.
