Vatican and Russian Orthodox Church Discussed Their Interrelations in Belarus


The secretary of state of Vatican cardinal Pietro Parolin received Metropolitan of Volokolamsk Illarion, the chairman of Foreign church relations department of Moscow patriarchate on the 26th of June. The hierarchs discussed the questions of interrelations between Orthodoxes and Catholics in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

The head of FCRD shared his impressions of his visit to Belarus as a part of delegation accompanying Patriarch Kirill and expressed his satisfaction with development of Orthodox-Catholic relations in the country, reports

Metropolitan Illarion and cardinal Pietro Parolin acknowledged the necessity of close cooperation of the two Churches in solving the situation in East Ukraine and providing the help to the victims of conflict.

A special attention had been given to the situation in the Middle East, where persecutions of Christians and humanitarian catastrophe reached an unprecedented scale.

On the same day the metropolitan met archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the chairman of Pontifical Council for the Family, with whom he discussed possible joint actions of Orthodoxes and Catholics for the cause of traditional family values protection. Also archbishop Vincenzo invited theMetropolitan of Volokolamsk to participate in the Families Congress that will take place in Philadelphia, USA, in the September of 2015.

On the evening of the same day metropolitan Illarion met the chairman of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, with whom he discussed the results of sessions of the Editing committee of the Joint comission for theological dialog between Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
