Lukashenko Expects Meeting With Pope


During the meeting with Claudio Gugerotti, the Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus, on the occasion of his diplomatic missio in Belarus coming to an end the President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko said that he expects to meet with Pope Francis. “I have many things to talk about with this person, highly esteemed by me”, – he said.

“I respect him a lot. I follow the news about him in the media, his speeches. I like his position, his respect to the poor, his views on the fight against corruption, on honsety and justice. I am gald that today Catholics have such a leader”, – emphasized the President according to BelTA.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, Belarusian aythorities make everything possible “to make the situation of Belarusian Catholics not worse than of th Catholics of ther countries”. As an example he gave the established academy of theology. He mentioned that he respects all faiths and religions if they are not used for terrorism or destabilization of the country.

The president also stated that he will continue the close dialog with Vatican. He also called Claudio Gugerotti “one of the best Vatican ambassadors”. “Your mission was honest, open, sometimes even more universal than diplomatic. You acted in some subjects of Belarusian relations with other countries on behalf of Belarus, of our people. I am grateful to you for it most of all”, – he emohasized.
