Metropolitan Pavel: Giving Up Julian Calender Might Bring Schism
On the one hand the subject of calendar is not the most topical, said the Metropolitan of Minsk and Zaslaul Pavel, the Patriarchal exarch of all Belarus on 5 January during the online conference on the site of Belarusian broadcastinc company.
“On the ither hand all service and the hole service cycle, all books had been based on it for centuries, it suits us. If we switch to the Gregorian calender we will create so many problems that we will have to solve. Besides, if we switch to the new style, I am 100 percent sure there will be a schism. Most of people will not support this idea. The question arises – why do we need it? That is why we will not discuss this possibility. We don’t need it”, – he mentioned.
The metropolitan also admitted that most of Orthodox Churches gave up the Julian calender. The only holiday they observe together, except the Finnish Church, is Easter.
The Patriarchal Exarch also mentioned that Belarusian Orthodox Church has no joint projects with other Orthodox churches. “A student exchange is possible, we invite each other to holidays, conferences, forums. But we try to not to interfere in lives of each other because every Church has its own traditions and plans. Of course, on the level of interecclesiastic relations there are joint meetings, discussions, anniversaries”, – he said.
